The Institute, as a structural training unit of the Presidential University IAPM, was set up in August 2000. It trains over 1,000 students today. The dean’s office of the Department of Social Sciences and Self-Government organizes the teaching process (full-time and correspondence study modes). Subdepartments represent the main element of the teaching process ensuring methodological support for teaching of educational subjects:

The list of areas, specialties is kept permanently updated subject to the prospects for development of social production and the labor market needs. Currently, students have an opportunity to receive education in the following areas and specialties.

The Institute uses a flexible professional development program in the “Psychology” area (the second higher education degree).

Sociologist and psychologist are basic specialties in demand almost at each institution, because a psychologist is somebody who manages personnel, teams, while a sociologist is one who examines the state of a community.

The Institute has a highly-skilled research and educational team that carries out high-quality training of experts and ensures state-of-the-art research work. Teaching staff of the subdepartments, up-to-date physical infrastructure, and advanced technologies constitute a guarantee of an adequate skill level of and a great need for our graduates in the labor market. The Institute’s subdepartments devote much attention to teaching subjects of an innovative nature designed to raise the level of academic, self-determination and self-improvement motivation of the students.

The psychological scientific school founded by the team of the Subdepartment of General Psychology is known not only in Ukraine but also outside its frontiers. The Subdepartment’s activities are organized by corresponding member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Psychological Science, professor George Oleksiyovych Ball and Deputy Head of the Subdepartment, Ph.D. in Psychology, Doctor of Psychology, and Professor of the International Personnel Academy O. L. Turynina.

Noted scholars work at the Subdepartment, in particular, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Psychological Science, professor H. V. Lozhkin,   Doctor of Psychological Science, professor O. I. Bondarchuk, Doctor of Psychological Science, professor O. M. Kokun, Doctor of Psychological Science, professor I. S. Bulakh, Doctor of Psychological Science, professor, full member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine I. D. Bekh.

The Subdepartment turns out practicing psychologists who work in various areas: on the factory floor, within the educational system, in law-enforcement bodies, armed forces, health authorities etc. Based on acquired knowledge and skills, psychologists graduated from the IAPM are able to carry out psychological diagnosis, psycho-managerial counseling, render psychological aid in solution of urgent problems to individuals and teams, contribute to improvement of the psychological climate, develop recommendations as to prevention of conflict situations; practically apply integrated methods of studying the psychosocial climate of a given team, as well as develop and implement socio-psychological research programs. Through their work, practicing psychologists promote mental health of the people, growth of society’s self-comprehension, implementation of the principles of humanism and democracy in our life.

The Subdepartment of Medical Psychology and Psychological Intervention is headed by Doctor of Medical Science, assistant professor Yurii Volodymyrovych Rul, a scientist known in Ukraine for his research efforts in the field of studying the influence of the alimentary factor on higher nervous activity in man, an acknowledged author of publications on food safety and mental health.

The Subdepartment also includes: honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Science, professor A. P. Chuprykov, Ph.D. in Medicine, professor Y. M. Prokopovych, Ph.D. in Medicine, full member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, noted scientist in the area of surgery, urology, sexology, oncology (author of the theory of “hypercompensatory tumor growth”) and psychology, professor V. A. Trachenko, Ph.D. in Psychology, assistant professor T. M. Vakulich.  Leading medical centers and clinics of Kyiv and Ukraine cooperate with the Subdepartment.

The Subdepartment trains experts for work at health care institutions (consultation and diagnostic activities at clinics of somatic and mental diseases), rehabilitation and advisory health centers, socio-psychological and personal care services (family service, crisis counseling line etc.), defense and law enforcement agencies (occupational selection, expert work), at educational, fostering, correctional labor and hospice institutions, as well as in the capacity of psychology instructors, consulting psychologists and so on.

Since February 2005, a psychological diagnostics and counseling laboratory operates under the Subdepartment of General Psychology led by Ph.D. in Psychology, assistant professor Liudmyla Oleksiivna Fedosova. Its overall objective is to contribute to personal growth and occupational formation of psychology students. The priority areas of activity are as follows:

  • Rendering of psychological aid to students, instructors and laboratory visitors.
  • Performance of vocational guidance work among pupils of Kyiv schools.
  • Holding of socio-psychological training sessions for psychology students and other population categories under the curricula: “Training for trainers,” “Counseling skills,” “Transactional analysis,” “Counseling within the health care system,” “Best techniques of positive therapy,” “NLP training,” “Ericsonics,” “TA practice,” “Work with teenagers and their parents,” “Art-therapy: self-image,” “Psychosomatics,” “Body-oriented therapy,” “Make-up, clothes, garments,” “Sand therapy,” “Art-therapy,” “Family counseling,” “Oratorical mastery,” “Phototherapy,” “Methodology and instruments of group psychotherapy,” “Psychotherapy of depressive and psychosomatic disorders through the guided affective imagery technique,” “Learning to be a mother – psychological follow-up of pregnant women,” “Psychodynamic group psychotherapy” and others.

The Subdepartment of Sociology is headed by Doctor of Psychological Science, professor, and honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, 1st rank civil servant, Oleksandr Vyacheslavovych Nelha. The teaching process involves noted scholars: Doctor of Sociology, professor V. I. Sudakov; honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Sociology, professor Y. P. Surmin, Doctor of Sociology, professor M. I. Piren, Doctor of Education, professor N. M. Chernuha, Doctor of Philosophy, professor M. P. Lukashevych, Doctor of Political Science, professor M. F. Holovatyi, Doctor of Sociology, professor N. V. Kovalisko, Doctor of Sociology, professor T. M. Rudnytska and others.

The sociology students undergo training courses at sociological centers, research institutes and institutions of Kyiv that conduct sociological studies, in particular: at the State Social Service for Children, Family and Youth, charitable foundation “Parostky.” The Subdepartment of Sociology entered into close cooperation with the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Public Employment Service Staff Retraining Institute, State Institute for Family and Youth Problems, International Solomon University etc. 

The Subdepartment graduates are experts able to carry out organizational and managerial activities within the system of personnel management and social development of labor collectives in various industries of the production and non-production spheres. Sociologists are destined to study the impact of social, psychosocial, economic, political, politico-legal and organizational factors on personnel labor activity performance in order to create favorable work conditions and derive satisfaction from its results; to take part in forecasting, designing and planning of social development of a given team. Graduates can work in bodies of legislative, executive power, local self-government of all levels in the positions of professional organizers of personnel and socio-psychological services and social development management units, at research organizations.

The Subdepartment of Self-Government Organization was established in September 2005. Its teaching staff trains civil servants for work at district, regional state administrations, local government bodies, as well as managers for enterprises and institutions. The Subdepartment employs experts holding the academic degree of Ph.D. in Public Administration, Historical and Political Sciences, as well as Doctors of Science representing the National Academy of Public Administration under the President of Ukraine, Institute of Legislation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of Ukraine, Accounting Chamber of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Kyiv National Economic University. Ph.D. in History, assistant professor Volodymyr Valeriyovych Utvenko is at the head of the Subdepartment.

The Subdepartment graduates are well trained for work in positions at bodies of the executive branch of power, institutions and organizations of local self-government.

The Subdepartment of Philosophy is led by Doctor of Philosophy, professor Viktoriya Borysivna Khalamendyk. It also includes Ph.D. in Philosophy, press secretary of the Dmytro Dontsov Scientific-Ideological Center, assistant professor O. B. Prymenko, Ph.D. in Physico-Mathematical Sciences, noted researcher into O. S. Pushkin’s creative work, Professor O. V. Pustovit and others. Implementing the standards of educational programs, the young and self-motivated teaching team of the Subdepartment seeks openness of the courses and encourages its students to active non-indifferent speculations on the key issues of philosophy of man, moral problems of modern age.

The Subdepartment of Ukrainian Orthodoxy and Theology has at its head D.Th. Dr.h.c. and professor of the International Personnel Academy, assistant professor of the Kyiv Theological Academy, member of the Synodal Division of Religious Education and Catechization of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, member of the Ecclesiastical Enlightenment Commission of the Kyiv Deanery, archpriest Dionysius (Denys Serhiyovych Martyshyn). It also includes scholars in the field of Christian theology and history: Candidate in Theology, Principal Chaplain of the Kyiv garrison of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, expert in church singing and liturgics protodeacon V. Y. Stetsiak, and Candidate in Theology, assistant professor, priest S. V. Kotsar, priest V. A. Polishchuk and others.

The history of pedagogy has known different approaches to the issue of the place and role of knowledge about religion in the teaching and educational activities of Secular School; polar opinions have been substantiated ranging from total ban on acquisition of knowledge about religion in Secular School to actual identification of secular and religious education. The place of knowledge about religion in the teaching and educational activities of Secular School is determined for a specific historical society, with due account of its history, cultural characteristics, consent of the main social movements and forces.

Renowned research scientist, archeologist and writer Yurii Oleksiyovych Shylov Ph.D. in History, professor, member of the Ukrainian Academy of Original Ideas, Orthodox Russian Academy, New York Academy of Sciences has been in charge of the Subdepartment of Ukrainian Studies for many years.

Its teaching team sees its educational mission in imparting to students patriotic sentiments and national ideals that are an integral part of development of the new generation. The teaching and educational process rests on the national idea formed as a result of the centuries-old struggle of Ukrainians and included in the storehouse of their history, which has been and remains pivotal in the rebirth of the nation, its original traditions and spiritual culture. Pages of the past are revealed and public-spirited rich experience of generations is studied with the help of Ukrainian studies-related subjects. 

The Institute includes the Reserve OfficersTraining and Military Registration Center led by Oleksandr Mykolayovych Kryvonos. The training time period constitutes 2 years. Those students who went through the full military training course under the reserve officers’ curriculum and were commissioned to officers are awarded the military rank of reserve second lieutenant.

Student scientific life at the Institute is many-sided. “Roundtables,” student interacademic conferences and international research-to-practice conferences on topical issues of psychology and sociology have already become traditional. Doctoral and postgraduate students of subdepartments representing not only Ukraine but also other states are involved in conferences. Research papers of students are published. Institute’s and Academy’s guests – noted political, academic and cultural figures of Ukraine and other states of the world – deliver lectures at the Institute.

Also, the Institute’s students are actively involved in All-Ukrainian student contests. The Students’ Scientific Society carries out a lot of fruitful work. Excursions are arranged under the guidance of professional instructors. In addition, the following students’ scientific circles operate in appropriate specialty areas:

  • “Advanced technologies and practices in social sciences” under the guidance of Doctor of Sociology, professor O. V. Nelha;
  •  “Empirio,” supervisor – instructor of the Subdepartment of Sociology  O. M. Karina;
  • A students’ scientific circle of the Subdepartment of Medical Psychology and Psychological Intervention operates under the auspices of the Kyiv city clinical psychoneurological hospital № 1, supervisor – assistant professor of the Subdepartment L. O. Fedosova.;
  • A students’ scientific circle studying history and theory of public administration “Avant-gardist” operates under the Subdepartment of Self-Government Organization, supervisor – Subdepartment Deputy Head P. F. Vozniuk;
  • Several circles operate under the aegis of the Subdepartment of Ukrainian Studies, viz. “Aratta” (supervisor – Head of the Subdepartment Y. O. Shylov), “Vytoky” (supervisor – assistant professor of the same subdepartment A. A. Hotsaliuk) and “Oberih” (supervisor – Deputy Head of the Subdepartment K. M. Sokolovska);
  • The Subdepartment of General Psychology supports such circles as “Socio-psychological problems of personal professional development of future psychologists” (supervisor – Deputy Head of the Subdepartment O. L. Turynina) and “Psychologist’s activity relating to optimization of the socio-psychological climate” (supervisor – Ph.D. in Psychology, assistant professor of the Subdepartment O. L. Shopsha).

The Institute’s students regularly go to theatres, art studios and workshops, exhibitions, actively and extensively travel and initiate themselves arrangement and holding of meetings with famed athletes, art critics, theatrical and film actors.

The Institute devotes much attention to arrangement of meaty and meaning leisure-time activity and active educational work with students.  Students have an opportunity to fulfill themselves in 22 sports groups. There also are a human personal safety and national martial arts center, music, theatrical, choreographic studios. The Institute has its own Club of Cheerful and Sharp-witted team. Original song contest, “Miss IAPM,” “Mr. IAPM” pageants, “Dancing with teachers” contest, celebrations of the Students’ Day, New Year, chess, volleyball, basketball, indoor soccer, aerobics competitions and etc. have already become traditional. Educational work plays an important role in the teaching process.
Upon completion of their studies, our graduates are in a position to work within their specialties or go onto further study as postgraduate and doctoral students. The IAPM’s recruitment agency assists the graduates in job placement at enterprises and organizations of different types of incorporation in Ukraine and outside its frontiers, arranges internships abroad.

Levels, modes and terms of study

Educational qualification level -- “Bachelor”

  • On the basis of complete general secondary education:

full-time — 4 years, correspondence — 4 and a half years.

  • On the basis of a junior specialist’s degree in an appropriate area:

full-time — 2 years, correspondence — 2 and a half years.

  • On the basis of a junior specialist’s degree in an inappropriate area:

full-time — 3 years, correspondence — 3 and a half years.

Educational qualification level -- “Specialist”

  • On the basis of complete general secondary education:

full-time — 1 year, correspondence — 1 year 3 months.

  • On the basis of a bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s degree in another area:

Вечірня —2 years, correspondence — 2 and a half years.

  • Correspondence retraining — 1 and a half years

Educational qualification level -- “Master”

  • On the basis of a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area:

full-time — 1 year and a half, correspondence —2 years.

  • On the basis of a specialist’s, master’s degree in an appropriate area:

full-time — 1 year, correspondence —1 year 3 months.

  • On the basis of a bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s degree in another area:

full-time — 2.4 years, correspondence — 3.3 years.

The term of study depends on applicants’ basic eduction and ranges from 1.3 to 4.6 years. Admission to all specialties under correspondence degree programs is effected 4 times a year (March, July, October, and December)

Provision of textbooks is included in the training cost.

Dormitory accommodation is provided to full-time students
